Christian Reflection on Suffering

Updated: Feb 17, 2020

"I Believe in Monsters: God, Horrendous Evils, and the Christian Faith" was a talk given by Dr. Mark Garcia at Covenant College. His reflections were prompted by Bart Ehrman’s 2008 book, God’s Problem: How the Bible Fails to Answer Our Most Important Question–Why We Suffer. In many ways it is not a pleasant listen, I can tell you. If you are seeking something “uplifting” this will not do the trick. Garcia takes us into the abyss of evil, a kind of guided tour of injustice and suffering. He takes pains to prevent us from shielding our eyes from it as though it was not there. But he also leads us along a path of believing wrestling with the reality of suffering in the light of the God who has revealed Himself in Scripture. I hope you will take an hour to listen; I believe you will find it worth your time.
