Isaiah’s Call
Isaiah 1:17
Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.
James 1:27
Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.
Time and again in Scripture we see the heart of God as he commands His people to care for the helpless: the widow and the orphan. Here at Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, we desire to take this call – a call to all Christians - seriously. We desire to faithfully fulfill this duty not only with an occasional prayer and the quiet compassion engendered within our hearts, but to actively find ways to “look after” the orphan in distress. It is out of this conviction that we began our orphan and adoption ministry, Isaiah's Call.
Who is the orphan? While the term most definitely includes the parentless child abandoned by death, by desparation, or by choice in every country of the world (including our own), it also includes those children in our own community who have been forgotten in the foster care system. Some of these children are able to be adopted and some are not, but the call to care for them remains. Each one of these children was created in the image of God with the divinely-given purpose of knowing and glorifying Him. We must both reach out and reach in to find ways of serving and sharing with these children.
What can we do? This will look differently for each person in our church, but each of us should be able to answer the question: “How am I caring for the orphan in distress?” Not everyone is called to grow his or her family through adoption, but some of us are. Perhaps others of us can help financially with the high cost of adoption or by supporting an orphan care project or orphan mission work. Some might consider the rewards and challenges of foster parenting or supporting those who take on this important task. Aiding the work of local crisis pregnancy centers that are on the front lines of defending the lives of the helpless is yet another way we can respond to the Lords call.
Please prayerfully consider what your involvement might be in this ministry to the orphans of Castle Rock, Colorado, and the world.
